Google Blog Search Relaunches- Let’s Play The ____ Killer Game

So, Google Blog Search has been relaunched, and you know what that means…..it’s time to play the _____ killer game.

You know the game. It’s the one where something launches and everyone says it’s going to kill another service. Plurk was going to be a twitter killer. The android phone was going to be the iPhone killer. Any video hosting and aggregation service is a YouTube killer.

Well, Google’s blog search is being called a Techmeme killer.

Nope.

Sure, they are aggregating stories from blogs like techmeme, and instead of just focusing on technology, they’re aggregating stories from all news topics. And they’re google, so they have that going for them. But to me, it’s just not the same.

I’m about to say something stupid. It happens. Make fun of me for it, I deserve it.

Google’s blog search has absolutely no personality. There’s no feeling here. It just feels, you know, automated. Sterile. I feel the need to scrub in before searching here.

And before you start typing a comment saying “hey idiot, techmeme is automated”, I assure you: I know that. But techmeme has a personality. It is intense. It is pressing. When I go to the site, it feels like I’m inside a fictional technology newspaper office where everyone is running back and forth with the latest breaking stories.

This could very well just be my bias. I mean, I check techmeme more times each day than I’d like to admit. It’s the last site I look at before I leave work, and it’s the first site I check when I get home. So maybe I’m just used to using it.

Like everything else, it’s just too early to make declarative statements. Lots of questions come up like:

• How do they decide which blogs to monitor?
• How often do they update?
• How do they stop people from gaming the system?
• How do blog search results compare with regular search results? What are the connections there? Is there an association, or does each service exist as a separate entity?

All good questions, and I’ll have to go out and find the answers.
